A big thank you from the doc!

I just wanted to write a short e-mail to say a very big thank you for such a fantastic trip away. I am going back to Kili in September and will find it hard to beat such a fantastic group of people. I had such a great time, it felt much more of a holiday than a job. You kept me laughing all week. The amount of times I was in fits of giggles in my tent listening to all the banter. Bill especially!! I was very impressive with Jane and her stoical nature and determination and unflappable calmness. Julie you kept me entertained with all your stories and listened to my drivel. Although there were difficult days for you, you also got on with it and got to the top despite this. Good on you. I absolutely new Gaon would get to the top because underneath there was a determination that no mountain was going to beat. Your family should be so proud of you. Brian, you are a natural born leader and finished a fantastic trip with organising the safari. Well done! Please go back up Kili soon. I think Tripod should get the bravery award for feeling so awful on summit night and putting up with me sticking a large needle in his thigh. I am pleased to say the Bipod is now back to being a tripod again. Yypee!! Paul lead us all the way to the top with his features that were bigger than the mountain! Despite being on empty he slogged it to the end. What a fantastic effort. David, you were also quietly determined and impressive with your effort. Melvyn my favourite boiled egg ever, you miss nothing and have a heart of gold. You looked fresh as anything on the top of Africa! Rob what an awesome effort on your part. You and Bill put such an amazing effort into summit night it showed true strength of character. And finally Daren. You got to the top of Kili after a really long night and kept Jane going too with your support. That was a great effort. However, I never want to eat a weird flavoured jelly bean ever again!

I could see all the training the group had done and the determination to succeed and it paid off. It was lovely to be with such a motivated group who not only achieved one of the hardest events in a lifetime but also raised a lot of money for such a worthy cause.

Thank you so much for my beautiful pendant which is currently in the jewellers awaiting a matching necklace. I have very little jewellery and yet I am have my most favourite stone to wear. It will always give me such great memories. I shall miss you all very much. Although no doctor's bag will ever have enough lansoprazole to keep you all in check. Go and sort your indigestion out!!!
Lots of love
Doctor Kirsty

All a bad dream.

The Kili Experience DIY

Hello again readers, this is for adults only.

How to replicate the Kili DIY experience from the comfort of your own home:

1. Set treadmill at 45 degree angle at speed 3 kph and walk for 8 hours
2. Place treadmill in freezer and disconnect lights
3. Make several small pin pricks in a plastic bag and place over head
4. Tie leather belt around chest and tighten until painful
5. Try to drink frozen water through a straw

Do all the above without having slept for 5 days.

Have fun and stay safe.

The Final Day

We came, we conquered and now we are drinking beer....
Today we had a short 6 hour trek and descended 3600m but nothing compares to the 16 hour trek on summit night yesterday. Our muscles ache including ones we didn't know we had!
At least we are now clean and tomorrow morning look forward to a short safari before we head back across the border into Kenya and to Nairobi airport.
What an adventure, what a trip of a lifetime and only one word can really describe what we have been through - relentless.
Our sincere thanks go to Dr Kirsty Watson who was an inspirational leader as well as providing the necessary medical assistance and advice, and really became an integrated member of the group - we salute you Major Watson.
We also could not forget thanking (?!) Marilyn who thoroughly researched this trip and then sent us packing on a little trek - words will be had when we see you!
And finally, let's remember the purpose of this trip and £35,000 has been raised to help build a new cardiac unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital when even more children's lives can be saved.
Signing off, kili2010

Kili surprise

Illness prevented 3 from making the summit but all have made a speedy recovery. 3 reached Gilman's Point and 5 also reached Uhuru Peak and it's amazing what you find at the top!

Trip has been fantastic and we have all walked for miles - we may need a good wash when we return.
